Protocols
Today marked another historic event in the area of sports development in Anambra state. I am i n deep mood of joy in welcoming every one of you to this 8th edition of Anambra state sports festival.
Ndi Anambra has what it takes to make in the sporting world. Going down the momory lane, we can recall the glorious days of our sports ambassador who made us proud in the likes of Godwin Achebe, Power Mike, Innocent Egbunike, James Nwoye, Nneka Okoh, Obiora Arine Metuh, Mary Onyali Omagbemi, Uchenna Emodolu, Ikem Okolue and host of others, too numerous to mention. We have done t before and we did it again today.
I recall with nostalgia what sports meant for ndi Anambra even before the creation of the state in 1991 and the numerous laurels won by our sportsmen and women. Ndi Igbo generally are sports lovers. We are not only involved as athletes but we invested so much in sports and sporting facilities. Today, the story is not the same, we are living in our past glories. So many things went wrong, first is the lack of interest and commitment in sports by various past government, secondly military intervention in governance and management of sports in those days to help matters and lastly, the pillars of sports lost interest as no encouragement come from those in authority at that time.
The administration of his Excellency, Chief, (Dr) Willie Obiano is clearly set to reverse this ugly trend. His excellency is in the lead of support and encouragement of athletes and coaches who have done the state proud though cash awards and sponsorship in developing their capacity intellectually and professionally.
His Excellency, Governor Obiano is committed to improving sports facilities in the state. Work is on at the chuba ikpau stadium Onitsha to rehabilitate it and make it standard. The same goes to Godwin Achebe Stadium Onitsha. Work is on going at Awka Township Stadium with major amendments to make it standard. the government of Dr. Willie Obiano is working out modalities to get the FIFA goal project in Awka resuscitated. in addition to all these, the government is extending a hand of fellowship to well meaning Anambraians, private individuals and organizations to tap into the new vision and partner with the state government in funding sports and sporting activities in the state.
Government cannot do it all alone.
Above all, his excellency has repeatedly stated that the four point agenda of his administration is anchored on agriculture, trade and commerce, industrialization, oil and gas. his excellency has laid the foundation for all these o thrive through security, youth and sports initiative. these are the keys that will serve as catalyst to these pillars of development.I enjoin Ndi Anmabra to key into this and help government achieve its laudable goals.
As you are aware, this is the 8th edition of Anambra state sports festival and it is the best so far. The 21 local government in the state and some federal institutions and agencies competed for laurels in 23 sporting events which include: athletics, badminton. basketball, boxing, chess, cricket, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, karate, kung-fu, kickboxing, scrabble, swimming, table tennis, taekwondp, tennis, traditional wrestling, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling and football.
Mouth watering pries, medals and trophies was given out to the best three athletes in each sporting activity and three local government with the highest number of medals was rewarded too. certificate of participation was given to all participants.
The aim of this festival is to discover talents who will represent the state in sports competitions which include the 19th national sports festival billed to hold in calabar. this festival therefore portends great opportunity for our young men and women to showcase their talents.
