Buhari orders Hajj Commission to account for all Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia

President Muhammadu Buhari has given a directive following conflicting reports on the number of Nigerians who died or suffered injuries in the Mecca catastrophe which reportedly claimed well over 700 lives.
The directive was contained in a statement released by the President’s Senior Special Assistant, Garba Shehu, in Abuja, Monday, where he ordered the National Hajj Commission and the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to urgently account for all Nigerian pilgrims in the aftermath of the stampede that happened in Mecca last Thursday.

The statement reads in part: “President Buhari is very concerned that days after the unfortunate incident, some Nigerian families are still grappling with painful uncertainty over the fate of their relatives who traveled to Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj.
“He has ordered the National Hajj Commission to collaborate with private travel agencies, the various state pilgrim boards and Islamic organizations involved in Hajj operations to promptly provide a confirmed and verifiable report on the status of every Nigerian pilgrim in Saudi Arabia,” the statement read.
