Boko Haram: Army foils suicide bomb attack in Borno, rescues 370 hostages

The Nigerian Army has announced that troops prevented three intending suicide bomb attackers from fulfilling their mission in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state on Friday.

A statement signed by Major General Lucky Irabor, the deputy theatre commander for Operation Lafiya Dole — the codename for ongoing counter-insurgency operation in North-East Nigeria — stated that gallant troops around the Mafa roadblock, shot one of the terrorists dead, while another detonated and in the process killed the third suicide bomber.
Irabor stated that in furtherance of the ongoing offensive operations to clear Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East, army troops on 17th January, conducted a clearance operation at Shentimari general area and cleared Boko Haram enclaves as well as recovered 78 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
He said that the troops on 18 January, similarly encountered and destroyed terrorists camps along Jillam, Bula Butube general areas during which 10 terrorists were killed while 2 AK47 Rifles, 2 AK47 magazines, 2 solar panels and 2 GSM handsets were recovered. One Isuzu vehicle was destroyed during the encounter.
Irabor listed other army operations in the region during the week, including the interception of 10 Boko Haram suspects from Bego, Mesemarri and Bale villages carrying bags containing food condiments, soaps, and other items. The suspects are said to be undergoing interrogation.
According to the Operation Lafiya Dole deputy theatre commander, an attack on Wednesday by Boko Haram on old Marte town was repelled by soldiers which resulted in the death of 21 terrorists, while 3 soldiers were wounded during the encounter.
Irabor stated that one Anti Aircraft Gun, 10 AK47 rifles,1 FN rifle,7 x 60mm mortar bombs, 342 rounds of 12.7mm, 507 rounds of 7.62mm ammunitions, 1 Toyota Hilux, 1 Land Cruiser vehicle, 1 Improvised Explosive Device with charger were captured from the terrorists.
More weapons were recovered from the terrorists on Thursday after a failed ambush attack on troops advancing to clear Dure village. In the same vein, at least 370 hostages were rescued from Boko Haram in an encounter at Kudiye, Mijigeteand taken to the camp for internally displaced persons (IDP) at Dikwa.
The Theatre Commander, Major General Hassan Umaru has commended the efforts of the troops while urging the public to be more vigilant and security conscious at all times.
